November 19, 1930 – May 14, 2024 Edward E. “Jack” Hooker, at age 93 of Ovando Montana, passed away at home on Montana Mountain View Ranch. A celebration of life will be held on August 24, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Bill & Dena Hooker’s residence in Ovando Montana. Jack was born in Hermiston, Oregon on November 19, 1930. At age 6 he worked with his uncle, LaVern learning to ride and break horses for surrounding ranchers. This started his passion for working with horses, which lasted his entire life. He would take a “troubled” horse and turn it into a companion. He was gifted by being a true “horse whisperer”. On a rainy night, at age 13, Jack took a saddle horse and a pack horse and headed for Nevada, crossing the high desert of Oregon. He found work riding rough stock on the Printey Brothers Ranch. Robert “Rob” Stermitz
June 11, 1972 — December 31, 2023 Robert James Stermitz of Gardiner, Montana, died peacefully in his home in Cinnabar Basin, surrounded by family, on December 31, 2023, after a twelve year battle with brain cancer. He was 51 years old. As a child, he enjoyed hiking on the family ranch, gardening, looking for arrowheads, reading, and cracking jokes. He also cherished his two sisters and his beloved childhood dog, Fritz. Rob first became an uncle in high school, where his love for his niece and nephew was an insight to the wonderful father he would become. February 21, 1928 – February 16, 2022 Gwen Petersen was well known around Montana and the West. She was an accomplished poet, author and editor of dozens of books and articles, creator of the first Montana Cowboy Poetry Gathering in 1986, playwright, perpetrator of the Toot, Hoot and Snoot show, illustrator, regular contributor to Range Magazine and The Fencepost agricultural publication, comedic character, and beloved friend. Gwen Petersen was born Gwendolyn Alice Norton, a lovely British girl, in Decatur, Illinois February 21, 1928. Her parents were Joseph Ingram Lyle Norton, and Mildred Mills Norton. She had four siblings: Dorothy (Jean), Tom, Harry and Janet; she and her younger brother Tom would keep in close contact her entire life.
